Fix iPhone - DFU and Recovery Mode Restore, iPod Touch

Chances are you have run into problems in the past with your iPhone or iPod Touch. You probably ended up restoring in iTunes. Sometimes your iPhone or iPod Touch will not be fixed and you are clueless. Here are two things to try when fixing your device in iTunes with a restore.

Start With The Easiest - Recovery Mode Restore:

  • Disconnect from computer
  • Power off.
  • Hold down "Home" button.
  • Holding the "Home" button connect to computer while holding the "Home" button (Don't let go).
  • Continue holding down the "Home" button until you see the connect to iTunes screen.
  • You are now in recovery mode.
Now just open iTunes it will say "Your device has been detected in Recovery Mode, you must restore", or something like that anyways. Click "Restore" if you want to upgrade to the most recent firmware, if you want to restore to say 3.1.2 download it here than hold "Shift", click "Restore" and open the downloaded firmware.

Your iPhone or iPod Touch should now be working, if you now want to jailbreak follow one of these tutorials.

If The Above Steps Did Not Fix Your Device Try This - DFU Mode Restore.
How to put your iPhone in DFU mode
  • Connect to computer.
  • Turn iDevice off
  • Hold "Home" and "Power/Sleep" for about 12 seconds or until you hear your computer recognize it.
  • When you hear the beep, let go of the "Power/Sleep" button but continue holding the "Home" button for another 20 seconds. Your screen should now be black.
  • Open iTunes
  • Click ok, and restore. You can also restore to a custom firmware by holding "Shift" when you click restore. Then search for an older firmware that can be downloaded from here.

If none of these things work I recommend trying it again.

The Differences Between DFU and Recovery Mode
It all revolves around something called iBoot and I will explain how

Recovery Mode

Recovery Mode is a state of iBoot that is used during standard upgrades and restores. As iBoot is active, it does not allow you to downgrade your device’s firmware.

DFU Mode

DFU Mode is a mode that does not load the iBoot. This will allow you to downgrade your iPhone firmware or upgrade with a custom firmware.
